Luke C. Sheahan is Associate Director and Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Freedom Project. He researches the intersection of the First Amendment and political theory to understand how the rights enshrined in the First Amendment negotiate the relationship between liberalism and democracy. Luke is author of "Why Associations Matter: The Individual, the State, and the Freedom of Associations" (forthcoming for the University Press of Kansas) which applies concepts from political sociology to critique the Supreme Court's freedom of association jurisprudence. He is also working on a second book manuscript tentatively titled, "Pluralism and Toleration: Difference, Justice, and the Social Group," a theoretical exploration of the rights and aspirations of a truly pluralist society that focuses on the social nature of persons and the necessity of free associations. From 2016-2018, Luke was a Postdoctoral Associate and Research Fellow in the Department of Political Science at Duke University. He received his PhD from the Catholic University of America.
