Freedom Of Expression In The Muslim World

January 22, 2018

Freedom Project's Wintersession 2018 focused on freedom of speech and its limits, and presented prominent lecturers from both within Wellesley College and other academic institutions. One of them was Serdar Kaya, a lecturer at the Simon Fraser University in Canada.

Should governments impose limits to the freedom of speech? If so, what are the justifications for these limits? Where should we draw the lines? This lecture revolves around these questions. It discusses the trade-offs between hate speech and free speech. The Danish cartoons crisis and the Charlie Hebdo incident are main cases under review. The primary focus is on the Islamic world, and frequent comparisons drawn from the United States and Canada help assess the current policy trends and their applications.
